If you are the parent of a child who has medical needs then you know how hard it is for your child to live a normal life. However, as your child ages, the need for them to feel like a normal child, teen, or young adult will not grow stronger so the best thing that you can do as a parent is to try to find ways that your child can have a normal life.
The fact of childhood is: children are not always nice so if your child has a medical need like having to take medication during the school day, it would be wise to make the process as inconspicuous as possible. If it is imperative that your child take their medication at a certain time of the day, arrange it with the teacher so that your child can slip out of the classroom to go the nurses and then slip back in. It is important to not make a big deal out of the situation so that your child feels awkward and is bombarded with questions.
As your child gets older there will be things that they may not be able to do that other kids are doing. It is important to talk to your teen about what they are being pressured to do. In most cases, they will be pressured to do something simple like play soccer or participate in an activity that could harm them. If your teen is uncomfortable explaining their medical condition to others, help them come up with a way to decline activities that they are not able to participate in without being rude.
