Many parents think of the school system as closed and contained entity where their input is not appreciated. Most parents will accept whatever educators say as absolute law. However, it is important to remember that no matter what the age of your child, you are your your child’s only advocate for their education.

The education that your child receives during the first years of their life will be the most important because it sets the stage for everything else they will learn for the rest of your life. Therefore, if you do not think that your child is getting enough instruction or that the teacher is not focusing on what you think is important, you have the right to voice your opinion. While the answer may be that you need to be more hands on when teaching your child what you think is important, at least you have made your concerns known.

If your child is older and you are concerned about what they are learning in school, you have every right to confront educators. There are standards that every child is required to learn like math, reading, and writing, and the skills for each subject should be more complex as the child ages. However, if you are concerned that the material that your child is being asked to read is too mature, or that your child should be placed in a more advanced math class, you are the only one who is going to speak up. Remember that your child’s education is the most important thing so speak your mind when you are concerned, the education system will listen.
